The original village shop, located opposite the village green, served the community from around 1850 before closing its doors for the final time in 2011. Rather than accept its loss, residents came together with a simple idea: “We’ll run one ourselves.”
HISTORY OF THE SHOP
The first chapter of the new shop began on 13th August 2011, with a temporary shipping container in the car park. For two years, while funds were raised and plans took shape, it provided newspapers, groceries and the essentials that kept the village going.
Funding came through a mix of community donations, share sales and grants, allowing the shop to be built on its current site. On Friday 27th September 2013, the new shop officially opened, complete with its own Post Office.
Since then, it has continued to grow. In 2019, the shop was extended to include additional seating and a stockroom, finally replacing the original container. The counter area was also redesigned to improve flow and create more space. This next stage was supported not only by donations and grants, but by the shop’s own success.
In 2020, during the pandemic, the café closed for much of the year, and the shop adapted once again. Newspapers were delivered daily to those isolating, and regular grocery deliveries supported households across the village. That spirit of care continues today, with weekly deliveries for those that need them.
WHAT IS A COMMUNITY SHOP?
A community shop is exactly that: something owned, shaped and sustained by the community it serves.
In Ide Hill, it means more than convenience. It means having essentials close at hand, particularly for those without transport. It means a place to meet, to pause, and to stay connected.
We prioritise local suppliers wherever we can, and there are always opportunities to get involved. In times of disruption, whether bad weather or something more unexpected, the shop remains a constant.
Most importantly, every pound spent stays here, supporting the shop and wider village life. We know our customers, we look out for one another, and we take pride in being part of something that genuinely matters.
